Yunlin Travel: Easter Lilies and Golden Bat House

Travel Date: 2021/05/02

Once again, we returned to Yunlin. I must admit that there isn't much to see there, mostly just countryside. Nevertheless, we decided to visit a place where Easter lilies were blooming. Although the location was small, it attracted many visitors. Due to recent COVID cases in the area (including nearby Beigang), we had to wear masks even outdoors.

Formosan Golden Bat’s Home (黃金蝙蝠生態館)

While driving around, we noticed a sign for the Formosan Golden Bat's Home and decided to check it out. Although we didn't see any bats, there were detailed descriptions, pictures, and even preserved bats on display. The Formosan Golden Bat Ecological Museum is renowned as the most famous bat ecological museum in Asia. It has received certification as an environmental education facility and is classified as a local cultural museum and a third-class sightseeing tourist area. The museum consists of seven sections, including exhibition halls, a bat contribution area, information on bat evolution and biodiversity, sensory experiences related to bats, their food habits and habitats, reading materials about bats, and bat research. The museum also features the largest bat house area in Asia, a treetop platform, and a kiln area located adjacent to the main pavilion.

In the summer of 1995, the museum's founder, Zhang Hengjia, discovered golden myotis bats on the trees in Suqin Village, Shuilin Township. The sight resembled a group of little pigs hidden among the leaves. Surprisingly, this small discovery marked the beginning of the study of two large myotis bat species in Taiwan.
