Changhua Travel: Lukang Museum of History

Lukang Museum of History (鹿港鎮史館)

The Lukang Street Dormitory, built in 1935, holds historical significance from the Japanese occupation period. During that time, the administrative organization overseeing Lukang Street was called "Jiyuechang," with the executive head known as the "Jiechang." Chen Huaicheng served as the first Lukang street chief, and the dormitory was constructed during the tenure of the second street chief, Yoshida Jjiro. Following the war, the building served as the staff dormitory and warehouse for the Lugang Town Office. It was designated as a historic building in 2002 and underwent restoration from September 17 of the following year until its completion in July 2004.

The street chief's dormitory is an all-wood Japanese-style building with a raised base and brick or wooden pillars. Its simple and ancient appearance reflects the Japanese architectural style, representing the years of Lugang Town during the era of Japanese occupation. The long dormitory on Guangfu Houjie was later converted into the warehouse for the Lukang Town Office. In recent years, the dormitory has been repurposed as the Lukang Town History Museum, showcasing numerous books on the literature and history of Lukang, as well as old photographs of the town.
