Pingtung Travel: Kayoufeng Falls

Finally, we had some free time and the weather looked promising today. We decided to go to Pingdong to buy some mangoes for our cakes. Since it was Dragon Boat Festival, there were quite a lot of people everywhere. On our way back, we encountered heavy traffic jams as many people were heading to Kenting for the holiday. We only had one day for travel, so we made a quick stop at a waterfall and bought some mangoes. Unfortunately, the weather forecast for next week predicts rain, so it seems we won't have another chance to travel again soon.

Kayoufeng Falls (卡悠峯瀑布)

Our first stop was at Kayoufeng Falls before noon. The road leading to the mountains was narrow, with many sections only wide enough for one car to pass, so we had to be extra cautious. It would have been easier if we were on a scooter. Along the way, we saw numerous mango farms. There was a small landslide, but it didn't block the road significantly. The most amazing thing for us was encountering a wild baby deer on the road. We have been to the mountains several times before, but we had never seen wild deer. Monkeys are more common to spot, especially in places like Kaohsiung or Taidong, where we have seen plenty of them.

The car park at the entrance of the hiking trail could accommodate several cars, but it was already full. There was also a toilet, but it had a terrible odor and was infested with ants. The trail itself was not very challenging, about 500 meters long with an elevation gain of 70 meters. Our 4-year-old had no trouble walking, and we saw many older people enjoying the hike as well. It took us about 20-30 minutes to reach the waterfall. The waterfall was 40 meters tall and 10 meters wide, located at an elevation of 260 meters above sea level. The water was clean and free from pollution. Many people even brought bottles to collect some water. Personally, I found the water to be cold, so I didn't fully enjoy swimming, but our son had a great time playing in the waterfall's pool, despite shivering from the cold.

In the following week, we went out again to buy more fruits. The weather was cloudier, with rainfall in the past few days. We had initially planned to visit another waterfall, but the road leading there was too narrow for a car. Instead, we decided to revisit Kayoufeng Falls. However, upon seeing dark clouds hovering over the mountains and encountering several landslides along the road, we opted to make a brief stop by the river instead.
