Taitung Hot Air Balloon Festival 2022: Night-View

2022/07/19-20

We attended the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Taitung after convincing my husband to go. We stayed in Taitung for only two days, primarily for the festival, but we also had the opportunity to visit other places. We attended the festival twice, once at night and once during sunrise. Unfortunately, the wind was too strong at night, resulting in fewer balloons being launched.
Additionally, we visited the Beinan Site and Longtian Village, which have many remnants from the Japanese era. We also made a stop in Hualien, specifically at a Japanese-era shrine. Lately, I've developed an obsession with Japanese buildings and shrines, even though I never had a desire to visit Japan. Perhaps I've become a bit bored with Taiwan and its architecture.

On our drive back along the coast road, we visited Nanrenshi, Sanxiantai, and even had the chance to see wild monkeys and the Amis Folk Center.
During our trip, my husband had a job interview with another company. He stayed in the car while I explored Beinan. Unfortunately, his interview was rescheduled and slightly disrupted our travel plans, as it was supposed to take place before we arrived in Taitung. Nonetheless, he managed to complete it. However, the signal in our accommodation wasn't strong enough for him to stay there, so he had to go to the nearby park.
We also had to shorten our trip because he had a second round of interviews. Wish him good luck anyway!

We came to Taitung for only 2 days, mainly to see the Hot Air Balloon Festival. On the first day, we visited Longtian Village, which used to be a Japanese village in this area. Since it's nearby Luye Highland, we also drove there to see the Hot Air Balloon Festival. We started driving from Longtien to Luye around 4 PM and arrived in 30 minutes. There was already traffic near the parking lots. We parked about 1 km away from the hill. The car parking price on weekdays is 100NT. Many people had already gathered, so it's recommended to come early. We brought a picnic mat with us, just like most people, as the balloon show would last from 5-7 PM. Unfortunately, due to the wind, we had to wait until 6 PM to see the first balloon being set up. A few others followed a couple of minutes later. However, the weather didn't allow for more balloons to be opened, as they are more expensive and could be damaged by the wind. It was challenging for people to keep the balloons stable as the wind moved them in different directions. Close to 7 PM, there was a short "light show" where all the pilots opened up the fire from the balloon equipment together. It could only last for 7 seconds, otherwise, the balloon would rise up. If all the balloons were opened, the view would have been really nice. It's advisable to bring a jacket, as the wind felt a little cold. There is also a possibility of rainfall in the afternoon.

The Taiwan International Balloon Festival began in 2011 and has created many new opportunities for air-related leisure and recreational activities in Taiwan. It's one of Taiwan's most anticipated summer events. In 2018, the Travel Channel selected it as one of the world's top 12 hot air balloon festivals. Visitors can enjoy the festival not only from the ground but also by taking a ride in a balloon.

The 2022 Taiwan International Balloon Festival features 7 night glow concerts, offering a different visual and audio experience for visitors to enjoy the most astounding balloon festival during the summer nights. This year's festival lasts from July 2nd until August 15th, with two timing options: 5 AM to 7 AM and 5 PM to 7 PM. The event is led by the one-and-only Hello Kitty balloon dressed in Bunun clothing! Many of the balloons this year come from Brazil, the US, and Japan. New balloons will be on display each week, totaling almost 30 balloons. Some of the featured balloons include The Heart Balloon, OhBear Balloon, Taipei Bravo Balloon, Rainbow Balloon, Taitung Balloon, Twilight Balloon, Witch Balloon, Sharky Balloon, Cristo Redentor Balloon, and The Car Lias Balloon
