Tainan Travel: Shanhua Beer Factory (Shanhua Brewery)

Shanhua Brewery (善化啤酒廠)

Shanhua Brewery (善化啤酒廠) is a beer production factory operated by the Taiwan Tobacco and Alcohol Company. It is the most important beer production facility in southern Taiwan and covers an area of 17.787 hectares. The brewery was formerly owned by the Taiwan Provincial Tobacco and Alcohol Marketing Bureau and was a successful brewery during that time.

In the 1960s, as the demand for beer in Taiwan grew, the public sales bureau decided to expand the existing Jianguo Brewery in northern Taiwan and build a new brewery in the central region to meet the increasing demand. However, due to capacity restrictions, the Jianguo Brewery and the Central Wuri Brewery couldn't accommodate further expansion. After considering various locations in Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung, the public sales bureau identified Shanhua as an ideal site. Shanhua had good transportation access, available farmland, and a convenient water source. The town mayor and representatives strongly supported the establishment of the brewery.

In July 1972, personnel from the public sales bureau visited modern beer production plants in Western European countries to study production equipment and technical aspects. Construction of the brewery began in December 1973, and after two years, beer production commenced in December 1975. The brewery had an annual production capacity of 7 million dozens of beer and a total investment of NT$1,077,000.

In 1980, a second-phase expansion project was undertaken to meet the growing demand for beer. The brewery adopted new brewing technology and completed the expansion in 1984. Subsequent expansions increased the total production to 27,000 tons of beer. In July 2002, the brewery was reorganized into Taiwan Tobacco and Alcohol Co., Ltd. In 2004, the Shanhua Brewery transformed into a beer culture park, becoming the first beer-themed sightseeing winery in Taiwan. The brewery received the Industrial Technology Research Institute's Energy Conservation Excellence Award in 2011. After a six-year hiatus, the beer festival at Shanhua Brewery resumed on July 8, 2017.

Currently, the brewery encompasses two malt plants, three sets of saccharification equipment, indoor fermentation tanks, indoor storage tanks, outdoor fermentation tanks, packaging machines, a substation, and a sewage treatment plant. The Shanhua Brewery produces various types of Taiwanese beer in cans (0.33 liters and 0.5 liters), Taiwanese gold beer, bottled Taiwanese beer (0.6 liters), Taiwanese gold beer, 18-day Taiwanese draft beer, and 40-liter barrels.
