Traveling around Taiwan, you may come across numerous Japanese-style buildings in different towns. Many of the Japanese dormitories built during the occupation of Taiwan have been well-preserved and are popular tourist attractions. One of the largest Japanese-style villages I have seen is located in Chiayi City, boasting a total of 29 houses. This village features various shops, restaurants, a Japanese clothes rental place, tea houses, and more. It tends to be quite crowded during weekends. Additionally, visitors can explore nearby attractions such as the Old Prison and Alishan Railway Garage.
Hinoki Village (檜意森活村)
Hinoki Village is situated in the East District of Chiayi City and is Taiwan's first forest-themed cultural and creative park. Spanning an area of approximately 3.4 hectares, the park is home to 29 historical buildings situated between Gonghe Road and Linsen East Road. At the intersection of Zhongxiao Road and Linsen East Road, you can find the "Agricultural Boutique Museum."
During the Japanese occupation, the government-run forestry business began in Alishan. To develop the forestry resources of Alishan, the Governor's Office constructed the Alishan Forest Railway, Chiayi Timber Plant, Forest Timber Storage Pool, and staff quarters for the Taiwan Governor's Office Forestry Office. Among them, the Japanese-style dormitory group of the Yinglin Institute was built between 1914 and 1943. The layout of the dormitory group features a patchwork arrangement, primarily consisting of traditional Japanese-style buildings, and also includes public facilities to cater to the needs of local residents, combining residential and commercial functions.
After World War II, the Japanese-style dormitory group was taken over by the Forestry Bureau of the Taiwan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Forestry and converted into the staff dormitory of the bureau. In 2005, 46 households within the complex were registered as Chiayi City Historic Buildings, with an additional 19 households registered in 2008, bringing the total to 65 households. The Hinoki Village currently preserves 29 Japanese-style wooden dormitories, including single-household buildings for senior managers, two-household buildings for supervisors and their dependents, and multi-family dormitories accommodating four families.
