Tainan Travel: Soulangh Cultural Park - Xiaoyu International Art Village

Soulangh Cultural Park (蕭壠文化園區)

The Soulangh Cultural Park, also known as Xiaoyu International Art Village, is a notable destination in Jiali District, Tainan City, particularly suitable for families with children. During our visit, the park was not crowded, and its expansive grassland offered ample space for kids to run and play. The park features a tourist service center, a restaurant, an exhibition and sales hall, as well as a camping and barbecue area. These amenities, along with water, electricity, and toilet facilities, create a comfortable and convenient environment. It has become a favorite spot for both campers and general visitors.

Originally, the park was the warehouse complex of the Jiali Sugar Factory, spanning a total area of 13.8 hectares. During the Japanese occupation, a series of 14 warehouses were interconnected by a train railway used to transport sugar. This unique historical feature, combined with the natural greenery surrounding the Jiali Sugar Factory, contributes to the park's charming rural atmosphere. After the warehouses fell into disuse, the park was established by the Tainan County Government as an ecological leisure park, offering a serene escape from urban life.

In 2003, the preparatory office of the Xiaoyu Cultural Park was established to renovate and repurpose the abandoned warehouse complex. The original appearance of the buildings was preserved, while efforts were made to enhance the natural environment through tree planting and landscaping. Various warehouse renovations and space transformations were carried out, resulting in each warehouse showcasing its own unique character. The park officially opened to the public in January 2005, breathing new life into the former sugar factory and transforming it into an art-centric hub.

Jiali Sugar Factory, once a thriving sugar production facility, ended its operations in 1998. Recognizing the potential of repurposing the idle space, the Cultural Construction Committee of the Executive Yuan listed it as a key governance project, promoting the concept of "Local Cultural Centers." The Tainan County Government designated the Jiali Sugar Factory as a premier site for transformation.

To support the development of the Xiaoyu Cultural Park, the then-county magistrate, Su Huanzhi, established the "Xiaoyu Cultural Park Project Consultant Team" comprising scholars and experts. In 2003, the Tainan County Government signed a land lease contract with Taiwan Sugar Company, initiating the park's construction. The 14 warehouses were transformed into ten exhibition halls and four public facilities, operating as spaces for public use.

Since its opening in 2005, the park gained recognition through the hosting of two consecutive World Candy Culture Festivals, showcasing the sugar industry as its backdrop. Subsequently, it co-organized major events like the Taiwan Design Expo in 2006. The park has also hosted various thematic exhibitions and provided display spaces for individual artists and students, contributing to its vibrant atmosphere.
In 2013, the Tainan Municipal Government Cultural Bureau launched the Xiaoyu International Art Village Project, inviting artists from Taiwan and other countries to engage in creative activities within the park.

Within the Soulangh Cultural Park, visitors can also explore the Silaya Pingpu Culture Museum, which highlights the life and history of the Silaya people, the most populous group of the native Pingpu population. The Tainan Art Gallery, designed in the theme of temple festivals, offers a reproduction of unique temples in the Tainan area. It also houses the Jialixing Zhenxing Palace clay sculpture group, which boasts a history of over 300 years. Additionally, the park features the Xiaoyu Children's Library, which was established through public participation and officially opened in October 2009, offering a wide range of books and fostering a love for reading among children.

Aligned with the Ministry of Culture's subsidy program for operating art villages, the Tainan Municipal Government Cultural Bureau engages with residents through art workshops and various exhibitions, nurturing a population interested in arts and culture in Tainan. Since 2013, artists have been applying to the village, and international art exchanges are facilitated, providing professional artists with a dedicated space within the Xiaoyu International Art Village.

Tainan Travel: Dutch Village Camping Ground

Deyuanpi Holland Village (德元埤荷蘭村)

One of the places in Tainan suitable for traveling with kids is the Deyuanpi Holland Village. During our visit, there weren't many people, and the spacious grassland provided an ideal space for kids to run around. The park offers various facilities, including a tourist service center, a restaurant, an exhibition and sales hall, as well as a camping and barbecue area. It provides convenient amenities such as water, electricity, and restrooms, ensuring a comfortable and peaceful environment. As a popular destination for campers and visitors, it offers a serene atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

Deyuanpi Holland Village is situated in Liuying District, Tainan City, covering an area of 7.9 hectares. It boasts a diverse ecosystem with ponds and wetlands. Surrounded by the verdant landscape of the nearby Liuying Dairy Farming Area, it creates a picturesque rural scenery. Originally developed by a local figure named Liu Deyuan, it was later established by the Tainan County Government as an ecological leisure park, offering a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life.

The county government recognized the neighboring Liuying District as a major dairy farming area in Taiwan, drawing similarities to the agricultural nature of the Netherlands with its land and water features. Therefore, the park incorporates authentic Dutch elements, such as the iconic windmill and Van Gogh Bridge, along with a red brick bridge, enhancing its rural charm and providing visitors with a taste of the Netherlands' natural and simplistic characteristics. It has become an exotic destination for tourists from all over Taiwan.

In recent years, camping has become a popular leisure activity for many people. The annual Windmill Festival, as well as occasional events like Oktoberfest and concerts, leave a lasting impression on visitors. After enjoying various activities, visitors can dine at local restaurants and savor the famous milk-based dishes, refueling themselves before continuing their exploration of the Dutch village. With its abundant activities and excellent facilities, the village offers a truly European and Dutch experience for tourists.

Taitung Travel: Luye Highlands

Travel Date: 2020/06/20~06/25

Our almost one-week-long holiday took us to the eastern part of Taiwan, exploring Yilan, Hualien, and Taitung. We started our journey by heading north from Tainan and made a stop at Fulong Beach in New Taipei to experience the Sand Sculpture Festival. The drive took us approximately 4 hours. From there, we continued to Yilan, where we visited various attractions such as Toucheng TownBrick KilnWine MuseumConfucius Templenight markets, and the Nanfangao Lookout. We spent two enjoyable days exploring Yilan before moving on to Hualien.

During our visit to Hualien, we had the opportunity to experience the breathtaking Taroko National Park for the first time. The scooter ride along the winding roads next to the tall cliffs felt a bit thrilling but was absolutely worth it for the stunning views. We also explored some of the Japanese remains in Hualien, including the Manor House and Pine Garden. Although I personally feel that Hualien may be slightly less captivating than Yilan or Taitung, we still enjoyed our time there.

On our way to Taitung, we made a stop at a beautiful waterfall and also visited Luye Highlands. As we typically visit Taitung more frequently, we didn't plan to stay there this time and decided to drive back to Tainan. However, as it coincided with the beginning of a long weekend, accommodations were fully booked, and traffic started to get heavier. If you're interested, I have many posts introducing other attractions in these three counties, so feel free to check them out. The eastern part of Taiwan is truly a beautiful region to explore.

On the last day of our journey, before heading back home, we made our final stop at Luye Highlands.
Unfortunately, it was not yet time for the Hot Air Balloon Festival when we visited, but we still made our way to Luye Highlands. It was our last day in the eastern part of Taiwan, and in the afternoon, we began our journey back to Tainan. Due to the Dragon Boat Festival, finding accommodation in the area was quite challenging. While Taidong was still relatively uncrowded, we saw heavy traffic on the opposite side of the road as we drove back from Taidong to Pingdong.

Luye Highlands (鹿野高台)

Luye Highland is a hill located in Taidong's Eastern Rift Valley. It is renowned as one of the most popular spots for hot air ballooning and paragliding. Since 2011, the longest hot air balloon festival in Taiwan has been held here every summer. The festival attracts a large number of visitors, with over 350,000 people attending the inaugural event organized by the Taitung government. The festival has been held annually ever since, except for this year when it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, it will take place from the middle of July.
Apart from the hot air balloons, Luye Highlands offers opportunities for paragliding throughout the year. Lessons and rides are available on-site for those interested. Additionally, there is a spacious grass area at the center of the hill that is open for public use, providing a pleasant space for relaxation and enjoyment.

Hualien & Taitung Travel: Hualien to Taitung

While driving from Hualien to Taidong, we made a few unplanned stops. Following the main road no. 9, we came across a spot with beautiful bald pines, located somewhere near Lichuan Aquafarm.
One of the stops we planned was at Fenghuang Waterfall (鳳凰瀑布風景區), located in the mountains near Fenglin District in Hualien. This area is inhabited by aboriginal people, and there are signs reminding visitors not to pollute the water source. We enjoyed the tranquil waterfall and were the only ones there. We even spotted shrimps, crabs, and fish in the water.

Along the road, we spot golden shower trees and flame trees in full bloom. These vibrant trees added bursts of color to the landscape, and it was evident that they were popular photo spots as we often noticed people taking pictures.
