Merry Christmas!
This year, Christmas feels more somber. Like many other foreigners, I'm unable to go back to my country and celebrate with my family. Being in Taiwan during this time of year doesn't feel particularly special. Although we can find Christmas decorations around, people here don't fully understand the meaning of Christmas and our traditions. There won't be a Christmas dinner or gifts, and I'll mostly be spending it with just my child. I don't have much holiday spirit this year. We don't even have a Christmas tree because we don't want to accumulate too many things in our rental apartment, especially since we move nearly every year.
My parents-in-law tried to give a "Christmas gift" to our son, but they just don't understand the significance of it. To me, it felt more like rubbish than a gift, something I'll likely discard soon (sorry).
Some time ago, we visited Tainan City to see the Christmas decorations, but we currently live in Shanhua, which is at least a 40-minute drive away. My husband usually works late, so going out far isn't possible. Thankfully, Xinshi Science Park has some decorations, although most of them belong to the TSMC factories, which can only be viewed from the streets. There is also Puxin Park near some accommodation buildings that have nice decorations, as well as Yingxi Lake nearby. It's not a large area, but it's still enjoyable if you live close by.
