In recent years, Douliu City Office has organized a small lantern show around the Lunar New Year, and this year is no exception. The Lantern Festival Lantern District is currently being actively constructed, and the main lantern for the Year of the Ox is nearing completion.
This year, the office has also expanded the lantern show to Taiping Old Street. Around 3,000 colorful lanterns are hung along Taiping Old Street, all hand-painted by primary and secondary schools in Douliu City. The lantern display will be available until March 15th.
Taiping Old Street is an unusually long street, stretching about 600 meters from Douliu Circle to Douliu Post Office. The buildings on Taiping Old Street were constructed during the Japanese era in the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. These buildings showcase a Baroque architectural style and are over a hundred years old. Each building has two floors, with intricately carved exteriors featuring lifelike patterns such as dragons and phoenixes. Some buildings even have the surnames of their residents engraved on them. The majority of the buildings are constructed with clean water bricks, along with elements of cement, washed stone, and classical mud block carvings, creating a distinctive brick facade.
To preserve these historical monuments and prevent them from being transformed into modern buildings, the Cultural Development Association and the city office collaborated on a historic street reconstruction plan. This plan included unifying shop signs, implementing leisure facilities, incorporating various plantings and street lights, and improving the street's overall appearance. The pavement was also paved with unique floor tiles, transforming the old street into an open-air leisure space that combines commerce, sightseeing, and recreational activities in Yunlin County.
Also on the way back to Huwei, we stoped to take few pictures of bald cypress.
